Here are some basic ways to clean up the most common types of spills on carpets and rugs.

Grease/Oil Spots/Blood-Use a microfiber cloth with plain water and rub the spot. Steam clean if needed.

Vomit-Use a neutralizer cleaner solution, and steam clean the room.

Candle Soot-Spray your carpet with a pre-treat cleaner and let sit for 10 min. Then shampoo area.

Black or Gray Rings (usually from dirt, dust, or outer edges of stairs etc…) Usually this is dust or dirt build up. Use a vacuum cleaner with the attachment for better suction.

Interior Rugs-Keep them vacuumed. If stained, use a carpet cleaner or hose them down. Some can be washed in the washing machine and hung to dry.  Depending on the size, you can also take them to the car wash and pressure wash them. Some may need to be professioally cleaned from the dry cleaner. (READ LABELS) Make sure you allow them to completely dry before putting back down ont he floor.

Exterior Rugs-Shake them on a regular basis. Hose them down often and make sure they dry completely before putting them back on the ground.  Replace as needed.

Dirt Paths-VACUUMING.  Or place a carpet in the areas with high traffic. By keeping the Dirt paths clean, this will allow your carpet to last longer and not be cut or the fibers will not be crushed.

Rust Stains-This is a tough stain, and will require you to hire a Professioal Rust Remover. A special acid is needed to be removed and gloves will need to be used.

Extra Help~

A carpet rake in conjunction with vacuuming, will really offer a way to help your carpets and rugs stay clean. They will not fray your carpet, and add great volume to matted down areas or high traffic areas. Great for animal hair too! They also can give you a quick vacuumed look!

Pre-Treat-Even when cleaning with a steam cleaner, you may want to pre-treat any stains 10-15 minutes before the actual cleaning, to allow plenty of time to take care of stubborn spots. This can make a big difference.

Berber Carpet-You can shampoo or clean with a machine, however, you should only have to use this cleaning method once or twice a year.
